All the controversy surrounding the depiction of Rani Padmavati and her alleged romance with Alauddin Khilji has now died down. The makers of the film have clarified that there will be “no romantic scene or song or dream sequence between Rani Padmavati and Alauddin Khilji”, but what’s interesting is that according to reports, Alauddin Khilji, played by Ranveer Singh, will be shown as bisexual.

What we know is that Deepika as Rani Padmavati and Shahid as Raja Rawal Ratan Singh are paired opposite each other in the historical while Aditya Rao Hydari is signed on to play one of Alauddin Khilji’s many wives in the film.

So while Padmavati will show Alauddin Khilji’s fascination for Rani Padmavati, it will also hint at a relationship between Khilji and his slave-general Malik Kafur. The role of Malik Kafur is being played by Jim Sarbh, who shot to fame with Neerja and was last seen in Raabta.

When the controversy around the depiction of Rani Padmavati and Alauddin Khilji’s relationship in the film first made headlines, a few media platforms had questioned if Bhansali was ignoring the more fascinating relationship - that between Khilji and Kafur. From these reports, we guess Bhansali has addressed that too.

Co-produced by Viacom 18 and Bhansali Productions, Padmavati releases on 1 December.
