Filmfare has been facing backlash for including Rajkumar Hirani in its list of nominees for its upcoming award show. The director-producer has been nominated under the category Best Director and his 2018 film Sanju is in the running for Best Film.

Hirani has been accused of sexual assault by a woman who worked with him on Sanju. The survivor had detailed her allegations in an email, dated 13 November 2018, which was sent to Sanju co-producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Anupama Chopra and Shelly Chopra, director of Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga with which Hirani was also associated.

Twitter users have called out Filmfare for nominating Rajkumar Hirani despite the allegations against him pointing out that the move does disservice to the #MeToo movement.

Rajkumar Hirani has denied the allegations, calling them a “false, malicious and mischievous being spread with the sole intention of destroying my reputation”.
