Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore wrote the short story Kabuliwala in 1892, and the tale - that of the friendship between a Pashtun merchant and a five-year-old girl in Calcutta - found instant fame and subsequent screen retellings. Now the story is making a comeback on the poet’s 157th birth anniversary with Bioscopewala, starring Danny Denzongpa, Geetanjali Thapa, Tisca Chopra, Adil Hussain and Ekavali Khanna.

An extension of the Kabuliwala story, Denzongpa here plays a bioscopewala, one of those early roving cinema-sellers. A violent Afghan civil war criss-crosses the narrative of the man who misses his daughter and forms an unlikely bond with another five-year-old through the magic of cinema.

Denzongpa seems to have delivered a poignant performance in this eternal tale of love and loss. Watch the trailer here:

Presented by Fox Star Studios in association with Star India, Bioscopewala is directed by Deb Medhekar. It will release on 25 May.
