According to a report in Economic Times, actor Anupam Kher will be playing former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in a film based on Sanjaya Baru’s book, The Accidental Prime Minister.

While Hansal Mehta has written the screenplay, the film, produced by Sunil Bohra and directed by Vijay Ratnakar Gutte, is expected to release in 2018.

“The research on the movie is already over. Auditioning (for the remaining cast) is in its final lap. The movie will hit the screens next year,” said Bohra, who has been a part of films like Gangs of Wasseypur and Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster.

Speaking to ET, Anupam Kher said that essaying a role of someone in “contemporary history is extremely challenging” and he looks “forward to the experience of portraying” the former prime minister.

Political commentator and policy analyst, Baru became Manmohan Singh's media adviser and chief spokesperson from May 2004 until August 2008. In his memoir, Baru has alleged that Manmohan was not in-charge of his own country when in power. The book has, reportedly, been denounced by the former PM, who indicated that it “smacks of fiction and coloured views of a former adviser”.
