Best Motion Picture Drama: Moonlight

Mahershala Ali and Naomi Harris starrer Moonlight was a deserving contender for the Best Motion Picture Drama at the 74th Golden Globe Awards. The Barry Jenkins’ film is the story of a young man dealing with a dysfunctional family. He comes of age in Miami during the "War on Drugs" era. The story of his struggle to find himself is told across three defining chapters in his life as he experiences the ecstasy, pain, and beauty of falling in love while grappling with his own sexuality. This unbearably personal film is an urgent social document and it takes a hard look at American reality, with a narrative that has a universal appeal.

Moonlight fought a tough battle with other gems in the same category-

Best Actress in a Motion Picture (Drama): Isabelle Huppert (Elle)

Isabelle Huppert’s win in the Best Actress category was quite a surprise, especially because Elle is in French. The internationally co-produced psychological thriller directed by Paul Verhoeven and written by David Birke, based on the novel Oh... by Philippe Djian, also received the Prix Interallié (National Literary Award). The film tells the story of a businesswoman, Michèle Leblanc, who is raped in her home by an unknown assailant and plots revenge. Huppert was as surprised as we were, and glad too.

Isabelle Huppert had a strong competitors in Amy Adams (Arrival) and Natalie Portman (Jackie).

Who better to give away this award than the best looking man in Hollywood, Leonardo DiCaprio.

Best Actor In a Motion Picture Drama: Casey Affleck

Manchester by the Sea is a 2016 American drama film written and directed by Kenneth Lonergan and starring Casey Affleck, Michelle Williams, Kyle Chandler, Gretchen Mol and Lucas Hedges. The plot follows an uncle who looks after his teenage nephew after the boy's father dies.

Casey Affleck took home the Golden Globein the Best Actor (Drama) category for Manchester By The Sea. Check out the trailer and the competitors in the category here.

Best Motion Picture, Comedy Or Musical : La La Land

Yup, as expected, La La Land won the big one. Who says Hollywood can’t make musicals as well as Bollywood? :P La La Land is the story of a musician and an aspiring actress who meet and fall in love in Los Angeles.

The film's title is a reference both to a nickname for the city of Los Angeles and to the idiom for being out of touch with reality. What a swell job this one has done for musicals and unconventional art in Hollywood.

And what a way to win! La La Land had seven nominations at the Golden Globes this year and it won in each of those categories.

Best Actress In A Motion Picture, Comedy Or Musical: Emma Stone

Emma Stone dedicated her award to the dreamers and to any and every creative person who has had a door slammed in their face, and actors who audition endlessly and wait patiently for a part. Sounds like Emma’s story when she was starting out. Her words had the film fraternity smiling with pride.

Emma Stone had some tough competition too. Imagine, she bagged this one over Meryl Streep who was incredible in Florence Fester Jenkins.

Matt Damon presented the award and was hilarious. He hasn’t been able to get over the fact that his film The Martian won in the comedy category last year, which stumped him and his whole team, since it was never intended to be comical. Awwww.

Best Actor In A Motion Picture, Comedy Or Musical: Ryan Gosling

Yup, as expected, Ryan Gosling took this away for his jazz act in the Hollywood musical La La Land. He jokes about being mistake for Ryan Reynolds. Gosling thanked his wife who took care of everything else in their life, so that he could be good in the film. Now that’s a graceful man right there.

Best Director: Damien Chazelle for La La Land

Damien Chazelle takes home the Best Director Golden Globe for La La Land. The musical is winning big, pretty much in every category that it has been nominated in.

Chazelle was clearly on cloud nine with two Golden Globes in his hands. But he’s never felt more humble he says.

Here’s another India connect, besides Priyanka Chopra of course. Dev Patel and Sunny Pawar introduce Hollywood to their Best Motion Picture nominee Lion. If you’ve missed the trailer, watch it here.

Legendary actress Meryl Streep was awarded the prestigious Cecil B. Demille Award at the Golden Globes this year and her acceptance speech was touching, like always. Though she had lost hr voice a little bit, but come to think of it, her cinema speaks louder than words so who cares, right? Like overtime she speaks, this time too, Meryl spoke about the power of women. She talked about diversity and trashed Donald Trump’s agenda of kicking out foreigners and immigrants, because art and creativity are nothing without them. Truer words have never been spoken.

An actor’s only job is to enter the lives of people who are different from us, and let you feel what that feels like.
Meryl Streep, Actress

Streep also spoke with disappointment about Donald Trump being in power as Hollywood listened in silent agreement.
