2015 threw up some really good films, and in those films we got to meet some very interesting and endearing characters. Though they might slightly overlap, don’t mix these guys up with the best performance listicles.

These are characters who are so likeable that you’d really want to meet them in real life OR they might remind you of someone you already know OR you might find a bit of yourself in each of them. They become loveable not just because of the writing but also because each actor who played the part brought something extra to the role.

Rana Chaudhary

Played by Irrfan Khan in Piku

I would stick my neck out and say that Irrfan as Rana was the performance of the year, and he’s also easily the most likeable too. He’s the man you had to read between the lines. There was so much in what he said and still more in what was left unsaid in those eyes. As the guy who’s struggling to run his taxi service, while dealing with temperamental clients, absconding drivers, a shrilly mother and equally irritating sister, Rana wins Piku over and us in the audience as well.

Datto

Played by Kangana Ranaut in Tanu Weds Manu Returns

I can’t put a finger on whether it’s the pixie haircut, those oversized dentures or the way she speaks Haryanvi, Kangana as Kusum Kumari Sangwan aka Datto, had us totally floored at her first long jump in Tanu Weds Manu Returns. Every time she does the ‘Ba Dekh… kabootar!’ trick and follows it up with that karate chop, you can’t help but cheer her on.

Munni

Played by Harshali Malhotra in Bajrangi Bhaijaan

Bajrangi Bhaijaan was as much Munni’s film as it was Bajrangi Pawan Kumar Chaturvedi’s. I am going to be a little politically incorrect here and say that the fact that the little girl played mute added immensely to her likeability, because we know how gratingly irritating saccharine Bollywood kids sound. Harshali was reportedly chosen after auditioning over 500 kids. Worth it, I say.

Sunny Gill

Played by Farhan Akhtar in Dil Dhadakne Do

Sunny is the coolest photojournalist ever. His two-day stubble, casual dressing mixed with his hardcore journo creds (working from Egypt, no less) and his liberal views make him the hottest eligible bachelor for the girls. And the fact that he can reignite passions with a much married Priyanka, make him the envy of all the men. Either way, totally likeable. Oh yes, dogs find him irresistible too.

Prem Prakash Tiwari

Played by Ayushmann Khurrana in Dum Laga Ke Haisha

It’s hard to be likeable if you’re playing the guy who dislikes his wife because she’s on the ‘heavier side’. But Prem Prakash Tiwari, the guy who’s ensconced in his own little world filled with audio cassettes and surrounded by Kumar Sanu’s mellifluous voice, is different. You can’t help but feel for this character who’s forced to grow up, berated by his father on one hand and squeamish about having sex with his wife on the other. The scene where he comes out mid-way from his bath and plays the Sanu song, “Abhi zinda hoon toh jee le ne do…”, to send a message to his wife and family is epic!
