Voting in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections might get you a 50-paise-per litre discount on your fuel bill on election day.

The Economic Times quoted an All India Petroleum Dealers Association (AIPDA) statement from Friday, 5 April, that said, “We have come forward to promote voting among the voters with a ‘Promote Voting’ campaign with a 50-paise/litre discount.”

The offer stands for almost the entire day, from 8 am to 8 pm at petrol stations participating in the campaign.

Staff from the petrol pumps would would also promote voting among their customers with pamphlets and other campaign material.

Customers eligible for the discount will be seen from the voting mark on their fingers. However, they will only be able to get the discount for a maximum of 20 litres of fuel.

The report quoted Ajay Bansal, AIPDA president, saying that he expects at least 90% of about 58,000 dealer members of the association to take part in the campaign.

He added that the dealers, not the oil companies, will bear the financial burden of the discount.

The report adds that India has approximately 64,000 petrol pumps of which around one-fourth are located in rural areas. State-run companies control 90% of the petrol stations.
