Election Commission Seizes 4.21 Crore of Cash in Phase V of UP Polls

The election commission on Monday revealed that it seized 4.21 crore of cash, 2.20 lakh litre of liquor worth 6.43 crore, drug worth 47.7 lakh, jewellery worth 53.36 lakh during the 5th phase of polling in UP.

SP Will Be Put on Ventilator After up Polls: Mayawati

BSP chief Mayawati today took a dig at Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and his wife Dimple Yadav and asserted that the Samajwadi Party will have to be put on ventilator after polls.

Mayawati also said after the poll results are out, the SP will require ventilator support to get the much-needed oxygen.

Her retort came a day after SP MP from Kannauj Dimple Yadav said in Jaunpur, "Buaa ji (Mayawati) has been waiting with a raakhi in her hand. But after SP's alliance with Congress, she is feeling the pain."

57 Percent Turnout Recorded Till 5 PM in Phase-V of UP Polls

Millions voted on Monday in 51 assembly constituencies in the fifth phase of staggered elections in Uttar Pradesh, officials said.

An estimated 57.36 percent of the 1.8 crore electorate had voted between 7 am and 5 pm, the Election Commission said.

After a slow start, voting picked up massively all across the 11 districts including Amethi, the Lok Sabha constituency of Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi.

Akhilesh Yadav, Rahul Gandhi Address Joint Rally in Gorakhpur

Addressing a joint rally in Gorakhpur, Akhilesh Yadav on Monday took pot shots at Prime Minister Modi and claimed it was the BJP’s fear of the SP-Congress alliance which has has forced it to resort to new political lows.

Alluding to the ‘Kabristan-Shamshaan’ comments of the PM, UP CM urged voters to be cautious of the BJP’s sinister designs.

BJP is trying to create a communal divide between the people. You (voters) should be cautious of their attempts.&nbsp;

Speaking at the rally, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi also attacked PM Modi. The Gandhi scion took on the PM for his empty claims made during the election campaign, while also adding;

As soon as he feels threatened he starts spewing venom. It’s in PM Modi’s DNA to spread hatred. It comes naturally to him.

Elderly Woman Votes in Ayodhya

Voters showed great enthusiasm on Monday as many came out to polling stations to choose their future leaders.

Among them was an elderly woman who was seen being helped by family members out of the a polling station in Ayodhya after casting her vote.

We Are Capable of Winning Majority on Our Own: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a rally in Mau while campaigning for the sixth phase of UP elections.

“I assure you we are capable of winning majority on our own, but small parties in alliance with us will get representation in cabinet,” he said.

“UP will also develop, it needs a stable BJP government.”

Talking about the SP-Congress alliance, he said that since the Samajwadi Party thought that they could not win the elections alone, they decided to form a last-minute tie up with Congress.

Modi attacked former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and said that when he was the PM, people of Ghazipur expressed concerns over poverty and had presented him with a report, but that he had taken no action.

Over 25 Percent Turnout Till Noon in Phase-V of UP Polls

An estimated over 25 percent of voters exercised their franchise till midday on Monday in the fifth phase of polling in Uttar Pradesh amid tight security, with all eyes on Amethi and Faizabad.

"Over 25 percent polling was recorded till noon," poll officials said here.

The voting was slow in the first two hours but picked up pace as the day progressed.

10.77 Percent Voting Recorded in Fifth Phase of Polls Till 9 AM

Amid tight security, polling began this morning in 51 Assembly constituencies of Uttar Pradesh spread across 11 districts that figure in the fifth phase, with all eyes on the Nehru-Gandhi pocket borough Amethi. Around 10.77 percent voting was recorded till 9 am.

UP Goes to Poll in the Fifth Phase

On Monday, phase five of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections commences. The parties contest for 51 seats and an electorate of 1.84 crore people will decide their fate.

The sensitive Terai region close to the foothills of Nepal and parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh are ready for the fifth phase of polling tomorrow in 51 Assembly constituencies spread across 11 districts.

The districts going to polls in this phase are Balrampur, Gonda, Faizabad, Ambedkar Nagar, Bahraich, Shravasti, Siddharth Nagar, Basti, Sant Kabir Nagar, Amethi, and Sultanpur.

The polling for this phase of the election finished on Sunday.

In all, 608 candidates are in the fray in this phase with maximum of 24 candidates in Amethi and minimum of six each in Kapilvastu and Etwa seats of Siddharth Nagar district.

Due to death of Samajwadi Party candidate Chandrashekhar Kanaujia in Alapur (Ambedkar Nagar), the EC has announced fresh date of voting in this constituency on 9 March.

Crorepatis and Criminals

Prominent contestants in this phase include controversial minister Gayatri Prasad Prajapati (SP), who will be facing Amita Singh (Congress) and Garima Singh (BJP) in Amethi, the Lok Sabha constituency of Rahul Gandhi.

Amita is the wife of Congress leader Sanjay Singh, while Garima is his estranged spouse, making it a "rani versus rani" contest.

1.84 crore voters, including 96 lakh women, will also decide the fate of ministers Vinod Kumar Singh alias Pandit Singh from Tarabganj (Gonda), Tej Narain Pandey alias Pawan Pandey from Ayodhya and BSP state president Ram Achal Rajbhar from Akbarpur in this phase.

Winners in 2012

The ruling Samajwadi Party had won 37 seats out of 52 (total seats in this phase including Alapur) in 2012.

While BJP and Congress won five seats each, BSP had won three and Peace Party won two seats.

Shravasti, Balrampur, Sultanpur and Ambedkar Nagar districts had emerged as stronghold of Samajwadi Party which won all the seats there in 2012.
