Jwala Gutta and Others’ Names Missing From Telangana Voters’ List
Residents of Telangana also staged protest in the state after finding their names mysteriously missing.
As polling for the 119 Assembly seats in the youngest state of India, Telangana on Friday, 7 December continues, many electors from the state including former badminton player, Jwala Gutta has expressed shock after finding that their names are ‘mysteriously’ missing from the voter's list.
In a series of tweets, Gutta said that it is surprising to find her name disappear from the voting list after checking online. Targeting the integrity of the election commission, the ace shuttler further questioned the ‘fairness’ of elections after names continue to ‘mysteriously disappear’ from the state.
"I had checked (my name) and then only went today (to vote) and my name was missing. My point is, my father and sister's names have been missing since the time we checked online," the badminton star said in a video message on twitter.
Speaking to news agency PTI, her father, Kranti Gutta said that Jwala's name was found on the voters' list around one month ago. He also claimed that their attempt to enrol online as a voter was not successful.
After Gutta tweeted claiming she couldn’t cast her vote, Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi Manish Sisodia came out in her support and lashed out at the Election Commission of India demanding answers.
People Protest Outside a Polling Station in Hyderabad After Finding Names Missing
Gutta was among many others from the state who have expressed anger after finding their names missing from the voters’ list. Angry voters on Friday, staged protests in several parts of the state including a polling station in Chandrayangutta, demanding the election commission’s response over this.
In Kamareddy district, nearly 300 people protested at the electoral office, alleging erasure of their data from electoral rolls, The News Minute reported. Addressing the media over this issue, deputy superintendent of police T Lakshmi Narayana said that officials can't do anything at this point if their names are not found in the voter list.
