Congress President Rahul Gandhi announced the party’s gift to women on International Women’s Day on Friday, 8 March. He said the party will ensure the passage of the long-standing Women’s Reservation Bill if it is elected to power in the Centre.
The party's women's wing, All India Mahila Congress, alleged that the BJP had promised to ensure passage of the women's reservation Bill in its 2014 election manifesto, but failed. A timeline that allegedly explains how many times the Congress party has tried to pass the women reservation Bill was also posted on Twitter.
“No longer can we allow our women to be under threat and to ensure this we need the Women's Reservation Bill,” tweeted Abdul Kadir, State Coordinator of NSUI Social Media.
National Spokesperson of AICC, Sushmita Dev put out a tweet saying that the Congress has passed the Bill for Panchayat and Municipality and will do it for Lok Sabha and Assembly.
Congress IT cell Head Divya Spandana pointed the inadequate representation of women in Lok Sabha and said it is time for that to change.
Twitterati also showed solidarity. One Twitter user said the Women’s Reservation Bill should no longer be a token cause. The question of inadequate representation of women in the Parliament was also raised.
Another Twitter user said India will not progress unless women are represented adequately in our supreme law-making body.
There were calls to smash patriarchy too on Twitter.
There was also some criticism. Twitterati asked why there is an insistence of Rahul Gandhi to pass the Women Reservation Bill now? And why not also Triple Talaq Bill?
