A day before it was slated to release on 11 April, the Election Commission has put a ban on the release of the film based on PM Narendra Modi’s life. The EC said that “any such film that subserves purpose of any political entity or individual should not be displayed in the electronic media” during the election season.

The EC order also applies to the channel NaMo TV and a web series based on the prime minister’s life, as per EC sources.

Social media was instantly flooded with reactions as the news broke.

‘NoMo NaMo’

Social media erupted in a furore over this decision by the EC, with some users cheering ‘the spine’ shown by the governing body and others saying it will not effect “the votes Modi will get”.

Another user tweeted, “der aaye durust aaye”, loosely translating to ‘better late than never’.

‘Notice the Timing’

While some are celebrating this decision by the EC, ‘hailing’ democracy, many other users have questioned the timing of the decision.

This user argues that creative process should not get affected in the name of politics.

Another user feels that the ban will actually help the NDA garner more votes than what was being projected earlier.

‘Vivek Oberoi Berozgar Again’

This decision by the EC has worried many users about the future of Vivek Oberoi’s career. One user tweeted that Oberoi’s acting would have been bad that it would have had a negative impact on voters.

Other users termed the actor as ‘Berozgar’ playing on the BJP’s ‘Chowkidar’ narrative.
