Conceding defeat in the Congress bastion of Amethi, party president Rahul Gandhi addressed a short press conference on Thursday, 23 May.

Congratulating BJP leader Smriti Irani for winning the elections from Amethi, he said: “I want to congratulate Smriti Irani for the victory in Amethi. I hope she respects the people’s mandate and takes care of the people of the electorate.”

He further said that he respected the people’s ‘clear mandate’, and added “Janta maalik hai. Today it doesn’t matter what went wrong, what matters is that the people of India have decided.”

In a message to his party workers, he said: “I want to tell my leaders who lost that you have nothing to fear. We will win the ideological fight.”

Here are some key takeaways from Gandhi’s press conference.
