Charanjit Singh Channi to Take Oath as Punjab Chief Minister on Monday

The swearing-in ceremony of Punjab CM-designate Charanjit Singh Channi is scheduled to take place on Monday, 20 September at 11 AM, Channi informed the press in Chandigarh on Sunday, after meeting the Punjab Governor Banwarilal Purohit.

"We have presented our stance, unanimously supported by party MLAs, before the Governor. Oath taking ceremony to take place at 11 AM tomorrow," Channi said.

Channi's appointment was announced by state party in charge Harish Rawat on Twitter.

An MLA from the Chamkaur Sahib Assembly constituency, Channi held the Technical Education & Industrial Training portfolio in the outgoing Cabinet.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi congratulated Channi and said, "We must continue to fulfill the promises made to the people of Punjab."

The PRO of Punjab Raj Bhawan informed news agency ANI that Rawat was scheduled to visit Punjab Raj Bhawan in Chandigarh to meet the governor at 6:30 pm on Sunday.

Channi will be the first Dalit Chief Minister of the state. The 48-year-old was the Leader of Opposition in the Punjab Assembly during the Parkash Singh Badal-led Akali-BJP government.

The Congress has been holding several meetings since the resignation of Captain Amarinder Singh from the post of CM on Saturday.
