Veteran actor and former Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Prada joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday, 26 March, just days before the first phase of the Lok Sabha elections.

The veteran actor will contest from Uttar Pradesh's Rampur, where she will face senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan.

Notably, this is the fifth political party that Jaya Prada is joining. In the past, she had been part of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Samajwadi Party (SP), Amar Singh's Rashtriya Lok Manch and the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD).

Speaking on Tuesday, Prada said:

“It is a key moment in my life. It is the first time that I have joined a national party and I am honoured to work under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership.”
