Naidu to Meet Mamata for Post-Poll Alliance Talks in Kolkata

A day after meeting Congress President Rahul Gandhi and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu will meet West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee here on Monday, sources said.

The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) President will meet Banerjee as part of his efforts to unite opposition parties against the BJP ahead of the Lok Sabha election results on 23 May.

“Naidu will hold a meeting with Mamata Banerjee at West Bengal secretariat this afternoon. Both will hold talks on the strategies of the 'mahagatbandhan' (grand alliance),” a highly placed source said.

During his interaction with Banerjee, Naidu is expected to brief her about his meetings with all political leaders in New Delhi over the weekend, the source said.

Dust Mistaken for Smoke in HP Poll Strong Room Triggers Panic

Election officials, accompanied by representatives of various political parties, opened the strong room in Himachal Pradesh's Reckong Peo on Monday morning after what appeared to be smoke was detected in the CCTV camera footage, a district official said.

Fire fighters reached the spot in no time as it was feared that a fire had broken out, he said.

However, later it was found that the cameras were set to the night vision mode and dust particles spreading in a corner of the strong room gave the impression that it was smoke, he said.

Subsequently, the setting of the CCTV cameras was changed and the strong room was sealed again, the official said.

NDA Will Win All 14 Seats in Jharkhand: CM Raghubar

Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das on Monday asserted that the NDA would win all the 14 seats in the state even though the exit polls predicted six to eight seats for the alliance.

Former Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Monday slammed the killing of a 60-year-old man by a Congress supporter in Indore allegedly for "voting for the BJP" and said he won't allow the state to become another West Bengal.

After visiting the deceased Nemichand Tanwar's son, who was injured in the attack, in a hospital in Indore, the BJP leader tweeted:

The Aam Aadmi Party has asked the Election Commission to provide additional security at a counting centre in South Delhi, alleging that political opponents plan to manipulate EVMs ahead of the announcement of poll results on 23 May.

The letter by AAP's South Delhi candidate and spokesperson, Raghav Chadha said that "he has strong reasons to believe that the political adversaries will attempt to open the strong rooms and manipulate or replace the machines as a handful of such incidents have been seen in the past".

The Election Commission has imposed Section 144 (prohibits assembly of more than four people in an area) in West Bengal's Bhatpara area due to post-poll violence.

Oppn to Meet EC Over Tallying of VVPAT Slips with EVM Figures

Ahead of the Lok Sabha poll results on 23 May, leaders of various opposition parties will meet the EC and raise the issue of tallying paper trail of votes (VVPATs) with electronic voting machine (EVM) figures as per Supreme Court directions.

The opposition parties are demanding tallying of VVPAT slips with EVM figures in an entire Assembly constituency in case a discrepancy is found in any polling booth.

The court has asked the EC to tally the VVPAT slips with the EVM figures of five polling stations in each Assembly constituency across the country, which may delay the results.

Chandni Chowk Presiding Officer Tried to 'Manipulate Data': EC

The Election Commission on Monday said that the presiding officer at polling station number 32 in Chandni Chowk Parliamentary constituency "tried to manipulate" voting data to hide his mistake of not deleting mock poll votes.

The Election Commission had directed disciplinary action against the presiding officer and ordered re-poll which was held on Sunday, 19 May.

Andhra Pradesh CM and TDP chief N. Chandrababu Naidu and other opposition parties leaders to hold a meeting on 21 May in Delhi. According to media reports, the meeting will be over the issue of EVMs.

BJP President Amit Shah, PM Modi to Host NDA Allies on Tuesday

PM Narendra Modi and Amit Shah will meet Union ministers of the party at the party headquarters before the BJP chief hosts a dinner for NDA partners on Tuesday, just two days ahead of the declaration of Lok Sabha poll results.

As most of the exit polls have predicted victory for the alliance, the ruling party has started preparations for celebrations and also for government formation immediately after the results are announced. The party has asked the district heads to intimate the candidates that those winning must reach the national capital the very next day (on 24 May).

Shah’s dinner meet for the alliance leaders is yet another signal by the party that it remains committed to the idea of strengthening the alliance and is not driven by over-confidence after some exit polls showed BJP could get a majority on its own.
