BJP Candidate's Car Attacked in Panaji

Two unidentified men Thursday midnight attacked a car in which BJP candidate Siddharth Kunkolienkar, who is contesting the bypoll for Panaji Assembly constituency, was travelling.

As per the complaint filed at Panaji police station, the incident took place at Mala locality in the Panaji Assembly constituency when Kunkolienkar was returned after visiting a temple.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Friday, 17 May, took a swipe at the BJP over its leaders making controversial remarks on Mahatma Gandhi's assassin Nathuram Godse, saying the BJP and the RSS are not "God-ke Lovers" but "God-se Lovers".

The Pandora's box opened on Thursday with BJP's Bhopal Lok Sabha candidate and Malegaon blast accused Pragya Singh Thakur lauding Godse as a "patriot" and issuing an apology hours later, saying she respected Gandhi and his work for the country cannot be forgotten.

"I finally got it. The BJP and the RSS... Are not God-Ke Lovers. They are God-Se Lovers," Rahul Gandhi tweeted.

Political Leaders Should Refrain from Addressing the Media During 'Silence Period': EC

The Election Commission says that in multi-phased poll, silence period of last 48 hours may be on in certain constituencies while campaign is ongoing in other constituencies. In such event, there shouldn't be reference amounting to soliciting support for parties or candidates in seats observing silence period.

“During the silence period, star campaigners and other Political Leaders should refrain from addressing the media by way of press conferences and giving interviews on election matters,” says the EC.

Plea in HC to Remove Election Symbol from Ballot Paper, EVM

A plea was filed in the Delhi High Court on Friday, 17 May, seeking to remove election symbol from the ballot paper, including the unit of the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM), in the municipal elections in the national capital.

The petition, listed for Friday, could not be heard as the bench concerned did not sit and would hear it on 27 May.

The plea filed by Alka Gahlot, who had contested and lost the MCD polls in 2017, said the state Election Commission puts the reserved symbol on the ballot paper in "blatant violation" of the provisions of the Constitution and the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act as there is no reference to political parties in the Part IX and IX-A of the Constitution and the Act.

SC Refuses to Grant Protection from Arrest to SP-BSP Alliance Candidate in Rape Case

The Supreme Court on Friday, 17 May, refused to grant interim protection from arrest to a SP-BSP alliance candidate from Ghosi Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh, who was seeking relief till 23 May in a rape case registered against him.

"Absolutely no case," a vacation bench of Justices Indira Banarjee and Sanjiv Khanna said at the outset of the hearing.

The counsel appearing for petitioner Atul Rai, who is accused of raping a college student from Varanasi, said polling in Ghosi is scheduled on 19 May in the last phase.

"It is not a case for quashing. Fight it out. Fight the election and this case too," the bench told the counsel, adding, "Sorry. You are well aware about the procedure of quashing".

Maha Cong Meet on 20 May to Choose New CLP Leader

The Maharashtra Congress Legislature Party (CLP) will meet on 20 May to choose its new leader after the resignation of Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil as CLP leader and Leader of Opposition in the Assembly, state unit chief Ashok Chavan said on Friday, 17 May.

Addressing a press conference, Chavan said AICC general secretary Mallikarjun Kharge will be present at the meeting.

Vikhe Patil had quit after his son Sujay joined the BJP when the NCP refused to the leave Ahmednagar Lok Sabha seat for ally Congress.

Chavan also said candidates have been asked to submit campaign reports, hoping that these would come in by 20 May.

Sunny Deol Approaches HC 'Fearing Misuse of Official Machinery' by Congress in Polls

Actor and BJP candidate from Gurdaspur Sunny Deol on Friday, 17 May, moved the Punjab and Haryana high court in Chandigarh "fearing misuse of official machinery" by the ruling Congress and sought adequate measures, including deployment of additional paramilitary forces, to ensure free and fair polling.

Deol also demanded that the Gurdaspur constituency be declared "super sensitive", claiming it was prone to violence. He cited the incidents of poll-related violence in the border constituency during panchayat polls which were conducted across the state in December 2018. "We moved the court because we feared the official machinery could be misused in the elections by the Congress," advocate Pankaj Jain, the counsel for Deol, told reporters.

MNM Seeks Calling off of May 19 Polls

The Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) party on Friday sought calling off the Sulur bypoll scheduled on 19 May after authorities denied permission for party chief Kamal Hassan to campaign there.

The party said permission was denied citing law and order issues and that many petitions had been sent, requesting denial of permission for the campaign, MNM General Secretary A Arunachalam said in a petition to the Election Commission of India.

Earlier, the Coimbatore police had denied permission to Haasan following a furore over his 'free India's first extremist was a Hindu' remarks, due to which Haasan could not undertake campaigning on Friday.

Arunachalam said permission had been sought for the campaign today and that MNM had been orally informed it would be granted.
