Sunny Deol, who joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday, 23 April, will contest the Lok Sabha elections from Gurdaspur, according to the latest list of candidates released by the party.

Earlier on Tuesday, Deol joined the party in the presence of Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Union minister Piyush Goyal was also present at the press conference to announce Deol’s induction into the party.

“I will work and show you my capabilities more than I can show in words,” Deol said at the press conference.

“The way my father (Dharmendra) worked with and supported Atal (Bihari Vajpayee) ji, I am here today to work with and support Modi ji. My work will do the talking.”

Welcoming Deol into the party, Sitharaman said that she was happy that Deol had been attracted to the work of the prime Minister and taken the decision to join the party.

Goyal said that he hoped that Deol would give as much to politics as he had given to his life in acting, saying that he knew the effort each role must have required. He welcomed Deol into the party, saying that he knew that he would work well for the nation.

The three did not take any questions at the press conference.

The actor had met BJP President Amit Shah in Pune on Friday, 19 April, sparking speculation over him joining the party and contesting the Lok Sabha elections.

Sunny Deol's father Dharmendra is currently campaigning for wife Hema Malini in Mathura.
