H Vasanthakumar, the Congress MP from Tamil Nadu's Kanyakumari, who had tested positive for COVID-19, passed away on Friday, 28 August. "We are deeply saddened by the untimely demise of H Vasanthakumar. A staunch Congressman, true leader of the people and beloved MP," the Congress party tweeted.

Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh has crossed the four-lakh mark in terms of the total number of COVID-19 cases, having recorded more than 10,000 new infections on Friday.

Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh has decided to go into seven-day self-quarantine, as per government protocol and on the advice of his doctors, after two MLAs who met him in the Vidhan Sabha tested positive for COVID-19, ANI reported on Friday, quoting the CM’s media advisor.

75% Cases Recovered in Last 5 Months, Says Govt

In the past 5 months, more than 75 percent of the cases have recovered and less than 25 percent are active now, the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare tweeted on Friday. Effective implementation of Centre's strategic and graded Test-Track-Treat approach has led to higher recoveries and lower fatality, the ministry said.

Record Spike of Over 77,000 Cases Takes India's COVD Tallt to 33.87 L

With a record spike of 77,266 fresh cases in the last 24 hours, India's COVID-19 case tally stood at 33.87 lakh on Friday, 28 August.

The COVID-19 tally now stand at 33,87,501 including 7,42,023 active cases, 25,83,948 cured/discharged/migrated & 61,529 deaths.

3.94 Cr Samples Tested in India Till Date

The total number of samples tested up to 27 August is 3,94,77,848 including 9,01,338 samples tested yesterday. the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said.

Asyymptomatic Patients in Jammu to be under Home Isolation

All asymptomatic COVID-19 positive patients in Jammu will be under home isolation, the Jammu and Kashmir Government said. Patients will be provided with oximeter for free, and need to download Aarogya Setu app. Asymptomatic patients admitted to hospital to remain there till they test negative.

557 New Cases in Rajasthan

At least 557 new COVID-19 cases were reported in Rajasthan today. The total number of cases now stand at 76,572 including 1,012 deaths.

Non-Essential Shops to be Shut on Monday, Tuesday in Urban Areas: Haryana Govt

The Haryana government on Friday said that shopping malls and shops, except those dealing with essential goods and services, will remain closed on Monday and Tuesday in urban areas to contain the spread of COVID-19, reported ANI.

There will be no bar on the opening of shops and shopping malls on Saturday and Sunday, the state government said.
