Centre wrote to all state Chief Secretaries on Saturday, 22 August, stating that there should be no restrictions on inter-state and intra-state movement of persons and goods.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, India recorded its biggest single-day spike of 69,878 cases and 945 deaths, according to the health ministry.

The overall number of global coronavirus cases has topped 22.8 million, while the deaths have increased to over 7,97,000, according to the Johns Hopkins University.

Sikkim Health Minister Tests Positive for COVID-19

Sikkim Health Minister MK Sharma announced in a Facebook post on Friday that he has tested positive for COVID-19.

"I'm under isolation and I'm fine. I appeal everyone not to panic and request those who came in contact with me (primary) to self-isolate and get tested after seven days of contact or earlier if they develop symptoms," the minister said in his post.

The World Health Organisation Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters on Friday that he hopes that the COVID-19 pandemic will finish in less than 2 years – faster than the time it took for Spanish Flu to end.

Global COVID-19 Cases Top 22.8 Mn: Johns Hopkins University

The overall number of global coronavirus cases has topped 22.8 million, while the deaths have increased to over 7,97,000, according to the Johns Hopkins University.

As of Saturday morning, the total number of cases stood at 22,864,873 and the fatalities rose to 7,97,787, the University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed in its latest update.

The US accounted for the world's highest number of cases and deaths at 56,21,035 and 1,75,350, respectively, according to the CSSE.

Brazil came in the second place with 35,32,330 infections and 1,13,358 deaths.

India recorded biggest single-day spike of 69,878 cases and 945 deaths in the last 24 hours, according to Health Ministry.

As on Saturday, 22 August, there are currently 6,97,330 active cases and 22,22,578 people have been discharged, said the Health Ministry.

No Restrictions on Inter- & Intra-State Movements: Centre to States

Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla has written to all states’ chief secretaries stating that there should be no restrictions on inter-state and intra-state movement of persons and goods. His letter states that any such restriction amounts to a violation of guidelines issued by MHA.

Punjab Cooperation and Jails Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa has tested positive for the novel coronavirus.
