Navya Naveli Nanda is no stranger to high society glitz and glamour. Her grandfather, Amitabh Bachchan, is the country’s biggest superstar. Her aunt, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, is India’s most easily recognised face in the international arena. Her uncle, Abhishek Bachchan, is a youth and style icon. And her grandmother is a superstar of yesteryear.

But now, she’s going to get a direct taste of the glamorous life.

17-year-old Navya will be participating in the Le Bal, an annual debutante ball held in Paris. She is one of the 25 girls from celebrity families who will be a part of the ball.

I’m going to be taking some dance lessons, so that my dancing is up to the mark, and also I will be going to the fittings to make sure that my dresses are fine, and also practicing walking in heels, because that’s unusual for me. I shall be walking around my bedroom in heels and trying to make sure that I don’t fall over.

Navya’s wardrobe and look will be crafted by some of the finest designers and make-up artists.

Traditionally, the ball was a medium to introduce well-presented young women from upper-class families to the society as well as to their potential ‘wealthy’ husbands.

The ball may not have the same cultural relevance, but it acts as an exclusive social networking platform that appeals not only to the high gentry but also luxury brand sponsors.

The tradition has been reinvented in Paris, London and New York, and has even sparked new editions in Shanghai. In addition to the Parisian Le Bal, another prominent debutante ball in the 1960s and ‘70s – The London Season – was revived by former deb Jennie Hallam-Peel in 2007.
