Year 1989, a lean clumsy looking star burst onto the screen. He was Salman Khan and the film was Maine Pyar Kiya. Every single song of that film became a superhit and people started identifying Salman with a rounded, addictive voice – the voice was of SP Balasubrahmanyam, or popularly known Salman Khan’s singing voice.

SP is a legend who has sung about 40000 songs in almost every Indian language. Down south, from the mid 60s, almost every film had a SP Balasubrahmanyam song. During the 80s he was mostly heard as the voice of Kamla Hasan – the Tamil Superstar.

It is in the 90s that everyone was humming a SPB number, thanks to the success of Maine Pyar Kiya. On his 72nd birthday, here’s wishing SP Balasubrahmanyam, Quint-style.
