The pitch at Rajkot had a thin layer of green grass, making it a good batting track. Even Gujarat Lions (GL) captain, Suresh Raina agreed that he too would have opted to bat first, had he won the toss.

Dhoni made no changes to his team while Raina inducted three changes into his team bringing in Pravin Tambe, Shadab Jakati and Akshdeep Nath in place of Pradeep Sangwan, Sarabjeet Ladda and Ishan Kishan.

Openers Ajinkya Rahane and Faf Du Plessis gave RPS a steady start as they added 27 runs for the first wicket in 3.5 overs. Raina inducted spin attack early on bringing in leg spinner Shadab Jakati and legbreak bowler Pravin Tambe. Things worked for him as Rahane was trapped LBW by the latter, making way for Kevin Pietersen.

Kevin Pietersen and Faf Du Plessis did not let any pressure creep in after the fall of the first wicket and both of them started hitting the ball all over the park. Their aggressive batting inducted a series of bowling changes from Raina.

The duo brought up the 100 for the team in 11.4 overs, much to the agony of Suresh Raina.

DJ Bravo came into the rescue of GL as he dismissing Kevin Pietersen for a quick fire 37. KP played on to a slower delivery, which knocked the bails off after hitting the middle stump.

Meanwhile, Du Plessis who scored his sixth IPL 50 of 33 balls tried to carry on the charge, but fell for 69 when he was stumped by Dinesh Karthik off Tambe’s bowling.

As both the set batsman made their way to the pavilion, GL lost another wicket cheaply as Steven Smith was caught by Faulkner off Jadeja’s bowling. Soon even Mitchell Marsh made his way out as he completely struggled against Jadeja’s bowling.

MS Dhoni joined in late to add a quick fire 22 of 10 balls while a brilliant bowling spell by Jadeja (2/14) restricted Pune from posting a huge total.

Chasing 164 to win, Aaron Finch and Brendon McCullum gave Gujarat Lions a confident start. Both added 50 on the board in just 5.3 overs. None of the bowlers were spared as the opening duo of GL hit the all over the park.

Legbreak bowler Murugan Ashwin gave RPS the first breakthrough when he dismissed Finch for 50 runs. The aggressive batsman tried sweeping the ball, but instead handed over an easy catch to Ishant Sharma in the fine leg area.

Soon, McCullum too followed with just a run short of his half century. The New Zealand dasher played a very loose shot of an Ishant Sharma delivery and handed an easy catch to du Plessis.

After the dismissal of the openers, captain Suresh Raina and DJ Bravo took charge of the GL chase. Raina played a steady innings while Bravo went on to hit the big shots. However, the captain departed soon, stumped by Dhoni of M Ashwin’s delivery. The 25 year old bowler from Tamil Nadu provided the break though once again to RPS.

However, DJ Bravo and Ravindra Jadeja took care of the situation after that and handed Gujarat Lions their second consecutive victory.
