‘Shoot Me, Not My Dalit Brothers’ was the refrain of Narendra Modi’s, well, highly dramatic appeal in Hyderabad on Sunday.

Amid a growing atmosphere of atrocities against Dalits, his sudden, vehement, and melodramatic criticism of self-proclaimed gau rakshaks and support for Dalits was not too well received by political parties and the aam aadmi (um, we don’t mean the party) alike.

The reactions ranged from quintessential memes, cartoons, voices of anger and skepticism to sentiments of doubt. Has Modi ji spoken too little, too late?
