National Investigative Agency (NIA) has dropped charges against Sadhvi Pragya Thakur, along with four others named in the chargesheet by Maharashtra ATS in 2009.

The agency filed its chargesheet in the 2008 Malegaon blasts case before a Mumbai special court on Friday.

The charges against 10 others charged under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) were diluted.

Lt Col Prasad Shrikant Purohit has been charged under anti-terror law Unlawful Activity Prevention Act (UAPA) and provisions of Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Seven people were killed in twin blasts when people were coming out of prayers during Ramzan in 29 September 2008.

The NIA has dropped the charges against the five named by it citing lack of “sufficient evidence” against them and submitted a fresh chargesheet stating the same.

Congress member Randeep Surjewala has slammed the government decision to give a clean chit to the five accused in the case.

Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh also alleged that the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is trying to save the terror accused.

The chargesheet also states that the evidence against the other key accused, Colonel Prasad Purohit, was fabricated.

The central government wanted to save Malegaon (blast case) accused as they have connections with them. Even Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) wants to save the people involved in terror activities.
