Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has written to PM Modi, ANI reports, after the Supreme Court stayed the centre’s notification allowing the bull-taming Jallikattu festival, earlier on Tuesday.

The court said they wanted to allow cultural practices but not when illegal. The apex court also said the notification issued by government was not in sync with earlier orders.

Bullock-cart racing, which was allowed by the centre through the January 7 notification, would also be stayed, say media reports.

The SC was hearing a petition by animal rights activists, including the Animal Welfare Board of India, on Tuesday. The SC also issued notices to the centre and states asking them to file responses in four weeks to the plea challenging the notification.

Last week, the government had lifted the ban on Jallikattu, circumventing a Supreme Court ruling of May 2014.

Animal rights organisations have welcomed the move.

Meanwhile, others differed on the judgment.
