Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Angela Merkel held talks on Monday to discuss stepping up bilateral cooperation in a range of key areas.

Special emphasis was on ramping up trade and investment at a time when the global economic slowdown is emerging as a major concern.

In an “ambitious” attempt to boost investment, PM Modi has announced easy licenses for German companies seeking to set up shop here.

Germany is also keen to improve cultural exchange between the two countries, through vocational and professional courses for students.

While Germany is interested in Indian expertise in software development, German firms will help set up solar energy projects in rural India .

India and Germany are strategic partners since 2001. The German Chancellor’s visit comes around six months after PM Modi’s tour to Germany in April. Both leaders are expected to meet again in Paris later this year at the 21st Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

India-Germany Ties

Germany is India’s largest trading partner in the European Union and the seventh largest foreign investor in India.

The overall exchange of goods and services between the two countries was valued at around around 15.96 billion Euros last year, a drop of 1.14 billion Euros from 2013.

While India’s exports to Germany rose marginally to 7.03 billion Euros in 2014, its German imports dropped to 8.92 billion Euros, from 9.19 Euros in the previous year.

More than 1,600 Indo-German collaborations and around 600 Indo-German joint ventures are currently in operation.
