  • Over 2,00,000 people in Sri Lanka have been hit by torrential rains and flash floods, that have killed 11 people. 176 shelter homes have been erected to provide accommodation to more than 134,000 people affected by the rainfall over the past three days.

  • The capital Colombo was the worst hit, with many roads submerged. Heavy rainfall caused trees to fall, blocking several roads, and snapped power cables, leading to power outages.

  • A meteorological department official said the low pressure which caused heavy rains has now moved towards south India. Sri Lankan armed forces have been put on alert since yesterday. Landslide warnings have been issued in at least eight districts.
