Another rhino has been killed in Kaziranga on Monday, taking the total number poached this year to eight.

Endangered one-horned rhinos, are poached for their horns which are sawed off and taken away by hunters, often while the rhino is still alive. Rhino horns are highly valued in the international black market for their so-called medicinal values.

Earlier this year, a rhino was killed 12 hours after Duke of Cambridge Prince William and his wife Duchess Kate Middleton had visited the Kaziranga National Park in April to raise awareness about rhino protection. Another rhino was poached two days before the royal couple’s visit.

Last year a total of 17 rhinos were poached.
