The Mumbai meat ban will not be imposed on September 13 and 18, the Bombay Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced.

The Bombay Mutton Dealer’s Association had dragged the BMC to court over the ban imposed on the occasion of Paryushan, calling it unconstitutional and protecting the interest of a particular community.

Arguments went on for the whole day. As far as the ban on 17th (September) is concerned, arguments have been made and the court has reserved orders. We have pressed that the ban on sale should be withdrawn.

The BMC filed its response to the case in the High Court on Friday and faced added slack from the court.

According to a report by NDTV, the High Court questioned the ban not being imposed on fish, eggs and sea food on the grounds of ahimsa. To which, top government lawyer Anil Singh said that the fish die as soon as they are out of the water and there is no slaughter involved.

The BJP or the ruling in the state or centre has nothing to do with this issue. And therefore I think it would be not very mature or in the interest of the people of the state for any of the political groups to seek to politicise the issue.
