Polish and Muslim leaders in Britain expressed concern on Monday after a spate of racially motivated hate crimes following last week’s vote to leave the European Union, in which immigration was widely regarded as a key factor in the outcome.

Outgoing Prime Minister of UK, David Cameron, condemned the attacks in parliament and said he had spoken to his Polish counterpart Beata Szydlo to express his concern and to reassure her that Poles in Britain would be protected.

Britian will not tolerate intolerance, Cameron said on Monday, after it emerged that over 100 incidents of racial abuse and hate crimes have been reported since the UK voted to leave the EU.

In the past few days we have seen despicable graffiti daubed on a Polish community centre, we’ve seen verbal abuse hurled against individuals because they are members of ethnic minorities. We will not stand for hate crime or these kinds of attacks. They must be stamped out.

Scotland Yard was called in to inspect graffiti found on the front entrance of the Polish Social and Cultural Association (POSK) in London early on Sunday morning.

Cambridgeshire Constabulary also investigated reports of racism on laminated signs, which asked members of the Polish community to leave the UK.

The Muslim Council of Britain, an umbrella group for many of the organisations which represent the country’s 2.7 million Muslims, also revealed that more than 100 hate crimes had been reported since the result of the referendum.

Baroness Warsi, the Conservative peer who stopped supporting Leave campaign because of the anti-immigrant tone of the campaign, said the “atmosphere on the street is not good”.

Many of the incidents being reported seem to indicate that those who voted to ‘Brexit’ believe that EU citizens living in the UK will be forced to leave the country instantly as a result of the referendum.
