The final chargesheet in the Mahatma Gandhi murder investigation is missing. The revelation was made courtesy an Odisha based RTI activist, Hemant Panda, who filed a seven point application to the Central Public Information Officer (CPIO) of the Ministry of Home Affairs on 22 March, 2013 seeking information about the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi.

On 5 April, 2013, the CPIO of the Ministry of Home Affairs transferred the application to The National Archives of India and The Director of the Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti (GSDS), an autonomous body supported by the Ministry of Culture to propagate the life, mission and thought of Mahatma Gandhi.

The matter came up on 25 June, 2015. The Central Information Commission report stated:

1) GSDS confirms that there was no postmortem performed on Mahatma Gandhi, as per the wishes of the family.

2) GSDS is not in possession of the FIR filed by the Delhi Police or final chargesheet filed in the assassination investigation.

The Central Information Commission has directed the Union Home Ministry to make public the FIR and chargesheet in connection with the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi within 30 days. These documents have remained confidential for over seven decades now.

“The appellant insisted that he had sought the information from MHA and they should provide it to him. Accordingly, we direct the CPIO of MHA to make another search to see whether any information regarding point no. 1 (FIR and chargesheet), mentioned above, is available in that Ministry or with the Tughlak Road Police Station,”
