So it’s that time of the year again. Just a few weeks ago, teenagers were celebrating the end of their dreaded board exams. The pressure-free summer stretched out in front of them, with holidays and parties and no thought to the future.
“How could the results be out so soon? Didn’t the exams just get over?”
Yes and yes!
With cut-offs in colleges going as high as 100 per cent, we don’t blame kids for being nervous.
But don’t worry. Even if your marks aren’t all that great, you can have a really successful career. You just need to think outside the box.
Here are five careers that don’t necessarily require high marks. This should give you just a little taste of what’s out there, no matter how you do in your boards.
1. Poetry in Motion
If you like to express yourself visually, have an interest in the technical and technology and love to play around with colours and light you could try becoming a cinematographer. You can make a pretty good living working in films, advertisements, documentaries and even television. The best part: you get to handle the best cameras in the world. There are a bunch of film schools in India and abroad you could try and get into. Or just begin by shooting your own films and putting them out online.
2. Wearable Art
You’re the best dressed person you know. You can effortlessly combine something from Fashion street or Sarojini Nagar with a designer bag. And you have an eye for colour and a talent for drawing. If the answer to these questions is YES, then maybe you should consider a career in the burgeoning fashion industry. An undergraduate course can cost you as little as seven thousand rupees.
3. Leaving on a Jetplane
If you’re likable, polite and love to travel, join a course to become a flight attendant. You get to see the world and the money isn’t too bad. Courses can be a little expensive, beginning at around Rs 80,000. But once you’re there, the world is your oyster.
4. Telling the Nation What it Wants to Know
Do you enjoy writing? Are you interested in the news – anything from politics and sports, to Bollywood and foreign affairs? If so, you should consider a career in journalism. As a journalist, you can work in multiple mediums including print, television and the internet. There are mass media diplomas and degrees that can help develop your natural instincts and talents. But the best way to learn is on the job!
5. Become Your Own Boss, Join The Start-Up Rush
You’re sitting around with a bunch of friends and cursing Flipkart or Zomato or whatever the latest start-up making headlines happens to be. You had the idea ages ago! Well, if you have a great idea and discipline to see it through, it maybe time to become an entrepreneur. The risks are pretty high, but then, so are the rewards.
