The Congress Party released a statement which said that a failure on part of Intelligence agencies was to be blamed for the ambush by insurgents in Manipur that killed 18 armymen yesterday.
The majority party in the Opposition sought to imply that the Modi government had been “ineffective” to secure India’s vast borders and claimed that 1000 ceasefire violations have been witnessed since its assumption of power, roughly one year ago.
Congress spokesperson, R P N Singh, pointed out to reporters the fact that it was a matter of concern that a day after the deadly ambush, intelligence agencies were “not aware” as to which insurgent organisation was behind the attack.
A former Minister of State for Home, Singh said that 10 years of the UPA’s rule had put peace accords in place and there had been a lull in insurgent activity. He said the incident was the worst in 33 years.
Pitching for strict action against the perpetrators, he said that Congress will stand by efforts that would weaken those working against national security.
Utilising the occasion, Singh took a dig at Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and asked him to refrain from making statements that “lower” his high office. Singh also claimed that the Defence Minister was not aware of how many Rafale jet fighter planes were being brought as his ministry is being run by the PMO.
