Maggi noodles will be taken off the shelves until “the current situation is clarified”, Nestle India said in a statement. The company came under pressure after five states banned Maggi for periods ranging from 15 days to three months.

Unfortunately, recent developments and unfounded concerns about the product have led to an environment of confusion for the consumer to such an extent that we have decided to withdraw the product off the shelves despite the product being safe.

According to the Telegraph, Nestle India said, “Maggi Noodles are completely safe and have been trusted in India for over 30 years. The trust of our consumers and the safety of our products is our first priority.”

“We promise that the trusted Maggi Noodles will be back in the market as soon as the current situation is clarified.”, said the company.

Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Tamil Nadu and Assam have banned the sale of Maggi noodles. Uttarakhand and Tamil Nadu governments imposed a three-month ban while Gujarat and Jammu and Kashmir opted for one month. The Assam government has banned the chicken variant for 30 days and Delhi has banned the sale of Maggi for 15 days.

Paul Bulcke, Global CEO, Nestle, is expected to hold a press conference this afternoon.
