A lot of what Akhtar says in the movie is extremely relatable, but DDD suffers from trying to do too many things during it’s massive 170 minute run time. Even though Dil Dhadakne Do may be a bumpy ride, there are enough laughs and genuine moments that don’t make you regret taking the journey.

For those who like the glossy world of fiction that was Akhtar’s terrain in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Dil Dhadakne Do may be just the lavish fix you want. If you’re a fan of Luck By Chance, however, you may find yourself shedding a tear as you long for the director who so skilfully blended wickedness, style and insight into a heady, charming mix.

Zoya Akhtar’s Dil Dhadakne Do is a film that has its heart in the right place but its beats are terribly irregular. It is an overly caramelised and flaky dysfunctional family drama that strives - and fails - to strike a balance between the sly and the syrupy. Hindi cinema history has seen one big film about “loving your parents”. Dil Dhadakne Do is about “hating your parents” and in the process compelling them to change their ways. Yawn! Dil Dhadakne Do is a snoozefest and a surefire cure for insomnia.
