Among the other significant things that defined most of our childhoods, Maggi took the cake (no pun intended). It shaped our tastebuds during our most formative years, and for most of us – became a friend for life.

Remember that time in college when you scraped the bottom of the barrel (quite literally), digging up the last remains of that tasty snack? Cooked with a host of imaginative ingredients – such as butter, cheese and chillies – Maggi was available for all to find at little haunts spread all cross the city.

Today, those are the very haunts that are struggling to keep their business thriving after the two-minute snack was abruptly withdrawn from the city’s markets.

The Quint took a nostalgic trip down memory lane through some of the places that have been associated with Maggi-dom.

Here’s what we found.

Uncle Tom’s might, for one, want to consider changing the name of this little shop.

The place was undoubtedly one of the most famous Maggi haunts in the city, with the chef whipping up a concoction of cheese, masala and Maggi that you can’t possibly replicate at home even if you tried.

Even as the students of Delhi University bemoan the loss of the snack, Uncle Tom’s is undeterred by the development.

Maggi was our primary business. But there is no Maggi now and it is what sold best during the admission season and when colleges reopened. We are now replacing Maggi with Wai Wai, Yippie Noodles and Top Ramen. Like we did with Maggi, we are making these with our own recipe too.

Tucked away in a little lane in Shahpur Jat Village, Potbelly boasts of traditional Bihari cuisine. Their litti chokha notwithstanding, what titillated people’s taste buds were their variants of Maggi, with their Keema Maggi usually flying off the shelves.

Despite it being one of their more popular products, however, Potbelly doesn’t want to run the risk of continuing its sales.

We have put up a notice saying that we have stopped serving. Some people are adamant that we serve them Maggi despite the ban. But neither are we stocking up on it nor serving it. We will not do so till it has been cleared and is available in the market again.

The Big Belly

Sudden evening cravings will no longer be satiated by Big Belly’s special Maggi. Nestled in the buzzing area of New Friends Colony market, the joint witnessed snaking queues waiting ever so patiently for this culinary delight.

But that is not to be anymore.

Scores of disappointed people return – not with a big belly but a deflated one. Perhaps there’s some solace to be had in the fact that the Big Belly understands their pain.

Our sales have gone down. People are disappointed when we tell them that our special Maggi is no longer available.
